§1What a flash tattoo is
A flash tattoo is a design drawn before anyone asks for it, ready to tattoo as it stands. The drawings are traditionally painted or printed on paper and put up on the shop wall or in a binder. A flash sheet is one such page, holding several designs, usually in a single style. Flash can also be the starting point for custom work: you pick a design and the artist adjusts the size, a color or a detail.
Every design on this page exists as flash in flat color, and the same drawing also prints as a stencil and an outline. That is the main difference from a wall of painted sheets. The version you choose from and the version that goes on your skin share one outline.
§2Where flash sheets come from
Flash grew up in American street shops of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Those shops tattooed a steady flow of walk-in customers and needed standard designs they could repeat quickly. By the 1920s several US companies sold design sheets by mail order, and flash reached shops through the same catalogs as machines and other supplies.
The old sheets set a look that is still easy to recognize: bold black outlines and flat fills in a short palette led by red, green, yellow and black, on subjects like roses, daggers, anchors and eagles. The traditional designs here follow that model. The rest use the same flat coloring on fine-line, chicano, Japanese and gothic drawings.

§4How to use the flash here
Narrow the grid with the style, placement and size filters, then print your shortlist in the Flash format at real size. A 3 inch color print held against a forearm tells you more than a thumbnail does. Once you have chosen, switch the same design to Stencil: it prints mirrored for transfer paper, with the outline you picked. For outline flash to color in or trace, use the Outline format.
§5Questions
Q1What is a tattoo flash sheet?
A page of ready-made tattoo designs, usually in one style, drawn for customers to choose from. On this site each design prints as its own sheet at the size you set.
Q2Is this tattoo flash free?
For personal use, yes, and an artist may tattoo any of it on a client. The files themselves are not for sale or for merchandise, by you or anyone else; see the terms.
Q3What is the difference between flash and a stencil?
Flash shows the finished look in color and is made for choosing. A stencil is the outline alone, mirrored, made for transferring onto skin. Here both come from the same drawing.
Q4Where can I find tattoo flash outlines to print?
Every design here has one. Open a design and switch the format to Outline: it prints black line art at real size, the right way round.
