§1Half sleeve, full sleeve or one tall piece
A full sleeve runs from the shoulder to the wrist. A half sleeve covers half the arm, usually shoulder to elbow, though some artists use the name for the forearm, so check which one yours means. Either is normally built over several sessions.
The designs here are not finished sleeves. Each is one tall piece, 5 to 7.5 inches by default, drawn to run along a limb. You can make one the centerpiece and let your artist plan the background around it, fill a forearm half sleeve with one or two, or build a flash sleeve out of separate pieces placed one at a time.
§2Which design for which sleeve
- Flower sleeve: FL-06 Cherry blossom branch and FL-05 Japanese chrysanthemum, both in Japanese style. BF-12 Three butterflies rising is a lighter fine-line option that sits well next to either.
- Japanese sleeve: SK-05 Japanese skull and snake beside FL-05 or FL-06.
- Dark blackwork sleeve: HT-12 Anatomical heart with vines, AN-11 Winged sword and CC-12 Pocket compass on a chain. Add SK-12 Stacked skulls for a gothic edge.
- Chicano sleeve: CR-12 Tall cross with banner and AN-05 Chicano praying angel.
- Spiders: SP-02 Spider web and SP-12 Spider dropping from web. Both are beginner-level line work, and a web can tie separate pieces into one sleeve.
§3Sleeve stencil sizes
Published size charts give ranges for a single tattoo, not a whole sleeve. Treat them as the minimum and measure the limb for the rest.
| Placement | Usual size | Good designs |
|---|---|---|
| Forearm | 3–6 in | FL-06, CR-12, BF-12, HT-12, SP-02 |
| Calf | 2–6 in | SK-12, CC-12, SP-12 |
| Thigh | 4–10 in | FL-05, SK-05, AN-11 |
| Back | 4–10 in | AN-05, FL-05, SK-05, BF-12 |
Ranges from the size charts by Saved Tattoo and Inkjin. Neither chart gives a size for a full sleeve.
A tall piece in a forearm half sleeve usually goes past the single-tattoo range, so measure from elbow to wrist and set the size from that. Designs set above 7.5 inches print across several numbered sheets; tape them edge to edge, row by row, before the transfer.
§4Questions
Q1Can I print a full sleeve tattoo stencil at home?
In parts. A full sleeve is built from several pieces, so print each design on its own at its own size. Anything over 7.5 inches splits across letter or A4 sheets that you tape together.
Q2Which designs suit a forearm half sleeve?
FL-06 Cherry blossom branch, CR-12 Tall cross with banner, HT-12 Anatomical heart with vines and SP-12 Spider dropping from web. All four are drawn tall, which fits the length of a forearm.
Q3Is there a flower sleeve tattoo stencil?
Two flower designs are drawn for a sleeve: FL-06 Cherry blossom branch and FL-05 Japanese chrysanthemum. Smaller flowers are on the flower stencils page.
Q4What is a flash sleeve?
A sleeve made of separate flash pieces, each tattooed on its own, instead of one connected design. Any design here can go into one; switch the format to Flash to compare them in color.
