§1Who this set is for

This set is for people learning to tattoo. If you are choosing a simple first tattoo for yourself, start with the easy tattoo stencils instead. The designs here are one step up from the simplest shapes: each has a closed outline and curves that change direction, and most add an area of solid black. That mix is what a practice piece needs.

Everything prints at real size, so a line you pull on practice skin is as long as it would be on an arm. Most designs default to 3 to 4 inches, large enough to show whether your lines stay even from start to finish.

§2A practice order that builds up

Work through the set in roughly this order:

  • Outlines only: SP-10 Spider outline, HT-01 Heart with banner (blank) and CR-01 Traditional cross with rays. Straight lines, even curves and a banner with no lettering.
  • Solid black: SK-08 Bold blackwork skull, BF-08 Bold blackwork butterfly, FL-08 Bold blackwork tulip and AN-08 Winged heart. Filling a flat black area evenly is a different job from pulling a line.
  • More parts that meet: R-04 Traditional rose with leaves, FL-01 Traditional sunflower, BF-11 Butterfly on a flower and CC-11 Compass with rope and banner. Here the joins between lines start to show.
  • Long lines: R-08 Rose vine wrap at 7 inches, SP-02 Spider web and SP-12 Spider dropping from web. A web tells you fast whether your hand drifts over distance.
  • Symmetry: HT-07 Geometric heart and SP-06 Geometric spider, where any wobble is easy to spot.

§3Getting the stencil onto practice skin

Print the Stencil format mirrored on thermal or inkjet stencil paper, the way you would for a client, so every practice run includes the transfer. Wipe the practice skin clean, apply the stencil the same way you would on skin, and lift the sheet without sliding it. The transfer is part of the skill, and practice skin is the place to get it wrong.

Keep the Outline format for paper. Tracing a design by hand a few times before you tattoo it teaches you the order of the lines, and it costs nothing but a pencil.

§4Questions

Q1What are good tattoo stencils for beginners?

Bold, closed outlines with few parts. SP-10 Spider outline, HT-01 Heart with banner and CR-01 Traditional cross with rays make good first pieces; add SK-08 or BF-08 when you want to practice solid black.

Q2What size should practice stencils be?

Print them at the size you would tattoo them. Most designs here default to 3 to 4 inches, inside the 3 to 6 inch forearm range from the size charts used on the motif pages.

Q3Can I tattoo these designs on clients later?

Yes. Once you work with clients, you can tattoo any design from this site on them under the same terms. What you cannot do is sell the files themselves or put them on merchandise.

Q4Is there beginner tattoo flash too?

Every design here has a flash version in flat color. Switch the format to Flash to see where the color blocks sit before you practice filling them.
